FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE (Frankfurt, Germany) I will be moderating two wonderful panels at the Frankfurt Book Fair:

  • 11AM (Sparks Stage, Hall 8) Hello, Reader!—How Independent Literary Publishers are Successfully Reaching Their Audiences

Audiences America’s “Big Six” publishers are struggling to figure out how to change in this new world of producing books, working to develop “vertical marketplaces,” and trying to figure out ways to reach readers directly. At the same time, America’s independent literary publishers seem to have figured out exactly who their readers are and how to reach them. Learn their secrets at this panel discussion featuring Anna Moschavakis of Ugly Duckling Presse and Johnny Temple of Akashic Books.

  • 2:30PM (Weltempfang, Salon) The Margins Move to the Middle: Small Press Publishers Take Center Stage

Once the last resort for literary agents and a second choice for most writers, American independent literary publishers have recently taken center stage, with books showing up on all of the major awards lists and authors and agents taking notice. What has changed? How are these small presses suddenly the toast of publishing? Jeffrey Lependorf (Executive Director of the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses) leads a discussion with the Erika Goldman (publisher of Bellevue Literary Press), Julie Schaper (President and COO Consortium Book Sales), and Ira Silverberg (Director of Literature, National Endowment for the Arts).
